Give yourself some compassion

Decluttering certainly is an act of will, determination, and vigilance – but it doesn’t have to be an act of self torture.

Sometimes when we bury our feelings, we consciously or unconsciously numb ourselves with stuff or other energy releasing behaviors. We collect physical items or resort to not-so-healthy behaviors we feel like we CAN control because our emotional lives feel so out of control.

“Stop-and read that again…..go on, read the above paragraph again-“

Many coveted things that we buy, can turn into clutter (anything that causes stagnant energy in your life), it only causes stuck-ness in your living space, but it creates stuck-ness in your mind and your own personal energy.

My biggest suggestion is that you try and ask yourself, “do I really need or will I use this before you buy?  If it’s too late, have deep, deep compassion for yourself during the purging process – beating yourself up or acting like a robot may be what is familiar to you, but there is another way. By bringing compassion into the situation, it gives you the opportunity to learn and grow from the experience rather than it just being about the physical act of decluttering.  Be mindful of how you really feel at the moments of purging.

If you feed on stress, negative thinking, anger, bad diet, poor sleep, burn-out, no exercise, shallow breathing and more, you block the energy flow through your body.  A cluttered home, workplace, car or purse can make you and your life cluttered and stuck, and going nowhere!

Every time you judge yourself-you break your heart-be kind…..

Blocked energy causes tiredness, low morale, low energy and ill health. If you don’t do something about it, your health could end up giving you big-time problems.

How to Never Misplace Something Important

Follow one tip, it is simple: For everything that you own, designate a place for it – label bins for some of those places / things to make it easier to remember. Then simply put it back where it belongs when done using it. It takes practice – you’ll see it works!

Should You Put Your Stuff in Storage?

Storage facilities – unless you live in a 250 square foot studio apartment in midtown NYC, they are a BAD idea. They suck down your cash. The chances of ever using any of this is about 2%. Get rid of that storage unit and put that money saved in your retirement fund or take a vacation!

If any of the items have sentimental value, take a picture of it and put it in your photo album! If it’s worth something, sell it at a tag sale, eBay, or a consignment shop. If you don’t sell it, donate to charity or a thrift shop. If someone in your family wants it, give them X amount of time to pick it up or else it goes out the door.

Avoid the procrastination habit!

We’re all guilty of some type of procrastination. The best way to deal with it is to process the task immediately. When you come home, immediately put all the groceries away. If you get junk mail, throw it out, don’t let it accumulate before you decide what to do with it. File important mail immediately. Better yet, get your bills electronically and pay them immediately when the email comes. This technique can be applied to almost any task that takes 10 minutes or less.

Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas

February is Archive your Files Month

  3. Some papers can be tossed IMMEDIATELY (Don’t forget to shred documents that contain personal information.)
  4. Stash important documents in safety deposit boxes or a home safe TODAY.

7 Day Countdown to the Holidays

Here are step by step tips for the one week countdown prior to Christmas (or any other major holiday)!

7 days out – gather and wash holiday plates, bowls, platters for the big feast

6 days out – make room in the fridge for holiday dishes

5 days out – wash sheets, towels and face cloths where guests will be staying and stack in their room

4 days out – vacuum and dust upstairs

3 days out – clean all bathrooms – the master last

2 days out – vacuum and dust downstairs (clean kitchen thoroughly)

1 day out – empty trash…..do a last minute de-cluttering trip through the house with a black garbage bag
(Hide clutter bag until all guests have left the building)
